Researchers examined data from 2,237 girls 9-19 years old, they were followed for up to a decade.
Data was collected annually.
Each participant was given a score based on how closely their diet matched the Dash diet.
According to the study girls with the highest Dash scores gained the least weight. They also ate more fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low fat dairy products.
At the University of Melbourne in Australia, researchers compared participants on a rapid weight loss diet with those on a gradual weight loss one.
Those on the rapid weight loss diet would lose about 3 pounds per week over a 12 week period Those on the gradual weight loss would lose 1 pound per week over a 36 week period.
The results showed that 78% of participants on the rapid diet met their target, while only 48% of those on the gradual diet did.
The risk for obesity starts as early as before birth; maternal factors such as smoking, gestational diabetes and obesity increase the chances of a child developing into an obese adult. Breastfeeding reduces the risk.
