Low Self Esteem Continues After Weight Loss

Obese teenage girls who become a normal weight benefit physically, a good reason to lose weight and prevent diseases.

According to a recent research report; however, their emotional health may not do as well. They continue to experience low self-esteem compared to girls who were never obese. 

The study was done on 2,206 black and white girls, they were followed for ten years beginning at age 9 to 10.

Prostate Cancer Screening Higher For Obese men

Prostate cancer screening is increased with weight according to a recent study.
In 3 of 4 studies obese men were more likely to have received a PSA test for prostate cancer than normal weight men.

Obesity is a risk factor for many cancers and other non-communicable diseases.

Obese Children Increased Risk For Hypertension

Obese children
 are at increased risk for hypertension, according to a recent study.

High blood pressure only prepares the child for hypertension as an adult.


Experts are emphasizing the importance of viewing overweight/obese kids differently to ones of normal weight to keep them healthy as children and adults.

Weight Loss Surgery Can Be Effective-Study

In a recent study researchers found that weight loss surgery was efffective whether the patient was depressed before surgery or not.

 According to the report patients lost 60% of their excess body weight withing one year.

 The report also found that:
  1. There was an average of 30% improvement in quality of life,  including greater mobility and social interactions
  2. The use of anti-depressants by patients who were depressed decreased by 20% one year after surgery.

Study Compared Weight Loss Surgery Clinics

In a recent study 30 private and publicly funded weight loss clinics were surveyed in Canada.


The survey examined information such as:

  • Wait time for surgery
  • Surgeon's experience
  • Cost
  • Number and type of pre and post-operative appointments
  • Location of service
  • Availability of on-site critical care
The researchers focused on gastric bypass surgery and adjustable gastric-banding.

Obese Women Can Lose Weight In Pregnancy-Study

According to a new study obese women may be able to lose weight in pregnancy and reduce the risk of a cesarean section or an overweight baby.


Researchers examined the medical records of 46,000 obese pregnant women who gave birth between 1993 and 2008.  The women were placed in three groups based on their body mass index (BMI).

1- A body mass index of 30-35
2- A body mass index of 35-40
3- A body mass index of over 40

Behavioral Intervention Can Manage Weight Gain in Pregnancy

Experts are considering adding behavioral intervention to pregnant women as a part of standard prenatal care.
This new approach will allow women to manage their weight during pregnancy and to return to their pre-pregnancy weight.
